Recent Reads: The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis

Hello and welcome back to the second book review in my recent reads series!

Most people know C.S. Lewis from his books about Narnia, like “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe”. Fairly few people in comparison know that he actually wrote a fair few books on theology. The Screwtape Letters are a collection of  letters from a Senior Devil called Screwtape, to his nephew, a Junior Devil called Wormwood. Screwtape writes these letters to encourage and guide Wormwood as to how to claim a human’s life for “Our Father Below”. We see before us a human’s life unfold, and go through many challenges that most Christians during their lifetime will face. The man faces guilt, temptation and pride along with other characteristics, and we see how the devils want to use these things to separate the man (and us!) from God.

81EDnN1NR2LI personally really enjoyed this book. It’s theological points are really powerful, but it definitely wasn’t dry or boring. I loved how practical and applicable it was, just by showing such a story within the letters of how someone lives. Sometimes you can tell that it was written a while ago (it was published in 1942!) but I personally think that it stands the test of time and while some circumstances are now outdated, the principles remain.

It’s definitely gave me some things to think about and I would whole-heartedly recommend it to anyone who is interested in reading some theology, but gets put off by the idea of highly intellectual books. If you want to give it a read, you can buy it on amazon.
